Newman College Students Represent at the 2026 Ironman 15 – 17 October

Students studying Business Services, Financial Services and Tourism, Travel, and Events were invited to an immersive, industry-based learning experience by running the bulk of the registration process for the Ironman 2026 event. Over three fast-paced days, more than 40 Newman students managed the arrival, check-in, and registration for 3,000 participating athletes and their support teams. Utilising specialised, streamlined event software, the students greeted participants with energy and professionalism while ensuring all strict Ironman and race compliance standards were met. Beyond customer processing, the opportunity provided students with firsthand insight into the complex operations of a major global sporting brand, balancing tight financial constraints, paid staff, and a massive network of over 2,000 volunteers and members of the public.

“The students were awesome to work with. They well and truly brought the energy – this was the loudest, highest-energy athlete check-in I’ve ever seen at any of our events! They were also very friendly, helpful and proactive, and represented IRONMAN extremely well. They really helped us deliver a fantastic experience to our athletes.” Andy Gibson, Event Services Manager, The Ironman Group Event

What made this achievement exceptional was the students’ ability to seamlessly bridge classroom theory with high-stakes, real-world execution. Processing 3,000 athletes under strict regulatory requirements demands precision, adaptability, and high customer service under pressure. The students distinguished themselves by maintaining an infectious atmosphere of enthusiasm and professional care for every athlete and guest entering the venue. Furthermore, navigating a multi-layered operating environment and collaborating directly with paid staff and members of the general public, as part of a team of 2,000+ volunteers, gave the students an extraordinary, behind-the-scenes masterclass in large-scale event logistics and financial management.

“I was really pleased to have the opportunity to take a shift on registration day for the Ironman. Given my excitement and enthusiasm for meeting competitors of all nationalities, the most enjoyable aspect of the day was the reaction of my fellow volunteers who had worked the day before with students from our college. They were buzzing with excitement at the prospect of working with them again because of the enthusiasm, joy, and absolute, boundless positivity our student showed. It was so uplifting and inspiring to know that our students had been able to bring this to the other volunteers, and I was very proud to say that I was a leader from Newman Senior Technical College.” Kevin Lewis, Assistant Principal – Mission and Pastoral Care, Newman Senior Technical College
