Nine competitors from Newman College will represent the WorldSkills NSW State team at the WorldSkills Australia 2025 National Championships, held on 12, 13, and 14 June at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The Vocational Education & Training in Schools (VETiS) competition will comprise students from Public, Catholic and Independent schools, all competing for the title. Competitors will travel with the local regional team on Tuesday morning, 10 June, to compete over the following days and attend the closing ceremony on Sunday, which includes a formal dinner event with their families, team leaders and guests – a fantastic experience for all.

“Training, guidance, and a passion for your area of trade sets you up to enter the competition with ease. Entering a competition at this level is nerve-wracking, especially since I will be competing against schools from all over Australia. Nevertheless, this experience is something I will remember forever. The skills I have learnt during training for this competition will be things I can use in my career, and hopefully, future employers will recognise the achievement.”  Newman College Business Services competitor Arjuna Devine commented.

More than 60 trades and skills from seven skill clusters are represented at WorldSkills, with competitions being designed by industry and skills experts who assess an individual’s knowledge, practical competence and employability skills against a set of strict criteria.

Newman College Teachers have also been selected to judge and mentor students – a testament to their industry experience and the quality of training they provide.

“Having several Newman College teaching staff also participate in WorldSkills competitions as Judges, mentors, and team leaders helps develop the training and knowledge for all participants, not just the students. However, it’s the students who have a chance to shine, and it’s so rewarding to see the sense of achievement in simply competing at this level.  Commented Janeden River – Leader of Learning – VET Curriculum, Newman College

WorldSkills Australia (WSA) has contributed to Australia’s sustainable economic prosperity by developing, recognising, and promoting skills excellence since 1981. Aiming to instil young Australians with the confidence to excel in their trade or skill by inspiring and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their trade and skill talent. WorldSkills achieves this goal through competitions held at regional, national, and international levels. All three levels of competition run biennially.
